Eating vegetables can help maintain lower blood pressure for several reasons:
- Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, collard greens, arugula, cabbage and broccoli. They are rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium and nitrates, which can help relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure.
- Sweet potatoes, which are a great source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin A. They can help regulate blood pressure and prevent oxidative damage.
- Peas, which are packed with fiber and hearth-healthy vitamins. They can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
- Beets, which are high in nitrates and antioxidants. They can help widen blood vessels and lower blood pressure.
- Garlic, which contains allicin, a compound that can help lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and inhibiting angiotensin II, a hormone that constricts blood vessels.
